| Before my purchase, I compared the Sansa Fuze with the iPod Nano (3G) and came away thinking the Fuze has a number of advantages. Its very nearly the same size as the Nano but the screen is negligibly smaller. The resolution is also a bit less (220 x 176 vs 320 x 240) but I think it is more than acceptable for most purposes. If you are going to watch a lot of videos you might want to opt for the Nano. Personally, I don't anticipate watching many videos on such a small display. The scroll wheel is also similar to the iPod but has a more tactile feel since it is mechanical and actually moves. Overall, the user interface is very responsive and easy to use. Advertised battery life is virtually identical. Some of the features that pushed me over to the Fuze are: Micro SD card expandable memory; built-in Audio Recording and FM radio; ability to use subscription services; works with MS Media Player; and, of course, significantly lower cost. The only disadvantages I can think of are the much more limited availability of accessories compared to the iPod. At this point I am very happy with the features, build quality and sound quality of the Fuze. I would highly recommend it. |
An Excellent MP3 Player

The Sandisk Sansa Fuze is a quality MP3 player. I've had the 4GB model for about a month. I've got about 1500 songs on it, with about half a gig of space left. I only use it for music -- I don't have any need or desire to see pictures or movies on a less than 2 inch screen. Paired with a pair of Audioengine 5 speakers Audioengine 5 - PC multimedia speakers for iPod - 45 Watt (total) - 2-way - black, it now serves as my primary stereo system. The sound is as good as or better than any component stereo system I've had. It plays for hours -- I think the claim of 24 hour battery life is probably reasonable, although I haven't let it run the battery all the way down before recharging. You can get a wall charger for it for next to nothing -- I got this one:SANDISK SANSA Premium Black Travel Wall A/C Charger for SanDisk Sansa c100 / c200 / e200 Series (although the Fuze is not listed, it does use the same input connection). This charger works great, and it's never taken more than a few minutes to charge the Fuze, much faster than using the computer to charge via USB connection.
The display is plenty large and legible. The controls have a good, solid feel, and navigation is really fairly intuitive once you get used to using the thumb wheel.
Although you can drag and drop music to the Fuze using Windows Explorer, I recommend creating playlists on Windows Media Player 11 and syncing them to the Fuze. The output leveling capability of WMP11 greatly reduces the problem of different volume levels among music files so you can shuffle your music without having to constantly adjust the volume.
I definitely recommend the Sansa Fuze. It's a bargain for its quality. |

| This is everything I ever wanted from an MP3 player plus more. By plus I mean 3 extra (BIG) features that the FUZE has and the Nano doesn't. That would be 1: microSD expansion slot ( I have an 8gb SDHC in mine, a total of 12gb ) 2: an FM Tuner and 3: The ability to record FM radio, That means recording a favorite song from the radio and going back and listening whenever you want YES!!!! . Another thing I like about the FUZE is that it's fully compatible with my Playstation 3 (the Nano isn't) . I pop in a CD and then import it into my Playstation 3 in MP3 format, then copy to my FUZE . The control wheel is easy to use as it actually turns and clicks so you won't over travel like on the Nano's very touch sensitive wheel. One feature that surprised me was the Podcast feature. I thought that feature was just for iPOD's. If there's one thing I don't like it would have to be the ON/OFF switch NOT button. It's a little hard to turn on and off with no nails. Overall, Im VERY satisfied with this neat looking, high quality, easy to use MP3 player and look forward on buying accessories for it with the $100+ that I saved on not buying a Nano. |

SanDisk has come out with an extension to their array of MP3 players, beyond the Clip and the View. Their new mp3 player, the Sansa Fuze, is definitely geared towards casual someone who just wants a basic, functional, and well-put together media device for their pocket.
The Sansa Fuze may look like a tiny device at first, but this thing packs some serious features. It has the ability to playback music, video, photos, FM radio, as well as audiobooks. The features for the Sansa Fuze are very impressive to say the least, as it also features a microSD card slot to add extra storage space, content, etc.
The first feature we will focus on is the one which will likely get the most use, the audio aspect. The music menu is organized with artist, album, song, genre, etc. There is also a recently added section which shows the most recent songs added onto the device, as well as a top rated section.
The album menu allows you to see album icons as you are scrolling through the various albums. There is also the ability to form a playlist directly on the player.
The sound quality is very well-done. If you have a great set of headphones you will not be disappointed in the least bit.
The video aspect is definitely not the highlight of the Sansa Fuze. Part of this is due to the low power of the device, and partly due to the screen itself. The supplied Sansa Media Converter does make it easy to convert movies into a format for the device though. A typical movie will take up a little under, or over 1GB. The video looks respectable, but can get a bit choppy at times. One very cool feature about the video is the ability to add a bookmark while watching it.
The photo viewer is very standard as you can view photos from the internal memory of a microSD card. You can set up a slide show with time intervals, and add music as well. The images looked quite sharp.
The FM radio feature is done extremely well on the Sansa Fuze. You get some great reception and the auto program feature picks out crystal clear radio stations. It also has the ability to record radio in WAV format.
This works with voice recording as well thanks to a microphone located right below the microSD slot.
Podcasts and audiobooks are pretty self-explanatory, but one issue with the audiobooks is the lack of a bookmark feature.
The overall user interface for the Sansa Fuze is put together nicely, set up in such a way that a first-time user could pick up this device and feel right at home with it. You have a scroll wheel as well as a home button and a middle click wheel. The scroll wheel can also be clicked up and down, which can make things a bit confusing at times. Overall though, beyond a few hiccups with organizational aspects of the UI, this is one easy device to use.
Getting media onto the Sansa Fuze is extremely simple as you can use any desktop media player to create playlists and such, easily syncing them to the device. It also supports drag and drop without the need for any software. We used Windows Media Player as well as a few other media players to test this all out, and syncing was as simple as can be.
The quality of the device itself is top-notch, as the screen can put out some great contrast and vibrant colors in spots. The screen is extremely clear and does a nice job with photo presentations. Battery life is equally as impressive, as I have been getting around 20 hours on each battery charge thus far. Video playback came in at around 6 hours on a charge.
The package comes with a proprietary USB cable and a pair of earbuds, pretty basic.
Also shipping with the Sansa Fuze is a great bonus, a microSD card which comes with DRM-free music from more than 50 new and emerging artists. This is a great way to immediately test out the music capabilities of the Sansa Fuze, and also adds value to the entire package. Music videos, images, and more are also included on the microSD card.
Overall SanDisk has done a great job with the Sansa Fuze. |

| Absolutely love it! I was somewhat apprehensive about not buying an iPod because I wanted a solid, high performance MP3 player and thought maybe I was taking a chance. Not the case - for half the price of the iPod, I got something better. The fidelity is incredible. The Fuze is extremely easy to use and import songs, albums, pictures, videos and audio books. The built-in FM receiver works as well as the one in my car. The sound recorder is a nice feature, too. The Fuze is attractive and easy on the eye with a large enough screen for viewing while still keeping the overall size small enough to fit easily in your jean's pocket. The micro-SD slot is great too for adding additional memory without having to replace the whole MP3 player. I got the external power kit which includes a wall and a car charger - highly recommended otherwise you are tied to the PC for charging. |
